StatementMonument for Childhood is a rendition of my childhood house—the first one my parents purchased. Though we moved away many years ago, it remains one of the most vivid imprints of my childhood. As a child, I naively asked my mother why we couldn’t simply disassemble the walls and bring the house with us. Back then, I didn’t fully grasp that memories are intangible and formless.
This was my attempt to carve out the walls that formed my earliest sense of a “place”, not just its physical qualities, but the intangible stuff it holds inside (maybe the things that make it so unforgettable). Essentially, it is never be a successful endeavor. How can one really give form to memories and sensations?
Process BreakdownTo construct a whole bloack of plaster, each side of the piece had to be built on its own and connected by a common ground. After carving detailed lines onto the first plaster planes, plaster-on-plaster mould was used to achieve the plaster details that extruded, a process that I came up with after experimenting several times.
